Chateau Montelena Description
The concept of vintage is very unique to wine. Unlike beer or spirits where bottling dates or cumulative age are noted for the benefit of the consumer, vintage ties back to the agriculture, to the growing season. It provides a fundamentally different perspective that shifts, at least superficially, the onus from the winery toward the role of nature in determining the characteristics of a wine toward its greater appreciation or enjoyment. Vintage is also somewhat mysterious. It can’t be measured, quantified and it can be difficult to characterize. And while nature doesn’t explicitly create wine, in as much as a tree creates a wooden table, the vintage provides the building blocks for us, the winemakers. It’s clear that our perspective on striving to accurately convey the growing season coupled with our wines’ longevity tie together a common thread that connects all of our vintages from the last five decades to one another.
